After reading the Burkitt text, I came away thinking about a
couple different ideas. In the text, the
author talks about some of the key factors of the social world being “technologies
of social saturation.” These
technologies included various pieces of technology such as telecommunication
systems, Internet, e-mail and things that have been around forever such as
newspapers, magazines and cinema. The
quote that stuck out to me when I was reading was when the author stated, “the
technologies of social saturation now make it possible for people to relate to
a variety of different and divergent others in ways they could never do in the
past” (p. 163). This got me thinking
about all the different means of communication and how much more information is
being spread around currently compared to years ago. There are so many different views and
opinions being spread over these different forms of media. It is impossible to really know which one to
follow. People have to really think about
things and can bond with others with similar voices or opinions because of
technology. There has never so many
outlets for information and it only continues to grow.
Hi SCBaseball,
ReplyDeleteI'm going to prod you to think differently on this one. Consider that because of social media, it is now easier to not look for some other whom you may chose to follow, rather, you can form your own critical opinions and use the social media outlets available to you and see if anyone wants to follow you!
I'm not much of a fan of being a follower, I prefer to lead. In that regard, I tend to read as much as I can on a topic and then posit my opinions. My opinions of course are formed by a number of things, not the least of which is my family. Research indicates that most folks in the U.S. are Democrats or Republicans due to their family; they tend to be consistent and rarely do they differ. So, I am of course influenced. However, I often shift in my thinking and I consider that growth, not "flip-flopping." And no, I do not always give the opposing party (to mine) that same option. :)
SCbaseball!
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I want to start out by saying i agree on the fact that there are so many ways for information to be spread around now days. It is so easy to spread a rumor about someone or something due to all of these social networks. A lot of people just sit at there computers and on there cell phones waiting for some juicy information to tell theyre best friend. And from there the game of telephone starts. He said she said is spread and the rumor that started may be totally different by the time it reaches the media or even the truth. I agree with your post 100%. Great job!
