Navigating Technomedia
by Sam Han was a well-written article that had many interesting points
throughout. For me, learning the
definition of Technomedia was extremely important. Technomedia was defined as "media
technologies that are defined by interoperability between devices, usually
using the internet as the connective modem…Thus technomedia refers to the
fluidity between various media and technologies" (p. 3). This definition was followed by an example of
how television has changed over time. I
was impressed after reading and thinking about how much technology has evolved
over the years, especially thinking about the TV, computer and cell phone. It is evident today that a lot of different
pieces of technology work together to achieve faster and more accurate results
by being able to work flawlessly with one another. This is supported in the article when the
author writes, "today, technomedia make even clearer that specific media
are not tied down to a corresponding technology" (p. 4). By branching out and combining, technology is
absolutely booming and continuing to do so.
Ideas are taken from the past and present, gearing towards an even more
advanced future. It is happening right
before our eyes, yet I feel that it is sometimes overlooked.
Another part of the article that I enjoyed was the part that
talked about the three eras of technology (Mechanical, Electric, and
Broadcast). Reading about some of the
earliest and most important inventions during these time periods was quite
informing.
In conclusion, seeing how the "fluidity" between media and
technology helps make our world more efficient was very insightful. I can only imagine how much more advanced the
future will be and what it entails for us.
Great article.
Hello SCBaseball! Great post! I have to agree with you that the definition of technomedia was very intriguing. I too wrote about it in my post. The three section of Mechanical, Electric and Broadcast were also inspiring. Though I knew almost all the things they covered in Broadcast, this article taught me some new concepts about the old ones. I also really like the comment from Richard Dienst, "he dreams of television were already global…televisaulity was immediately imagined as an all-encompassing putting-into-view of the world," (9-10). Now people can view the world from their own homes without having to move (Though it is not the same as being in the place, people now get a visual of what Japan or Spain look like). This article was an easy read for me because it was edutainment: educational and entertainment combined :)
ReplyDeleteVery intriguing and analytical summary SCbaseball. I like how you use quotes to portray a clear message by the author. I also find it amazing that different technologies work so seamlessly together in our modern world. Different devices are constantly speaking and working with one another to make our technological world run smoothly. The internet is also a huge factor in contributing to technomedia. On the internet one can find a vast range of media's that are inextricably linked to one another through countless channels. The way our media can be delivered to us through an array of technological devices is very essential for news and entertainment purposes.
ReplyDeleteScBaseball,
ReplyDeleteThis article was interesting to read because I was able to learn what Technomedia means and how it has an effect on the world today. I like how they used the example about the internet as a Technomedia. The internet was brand new to most people over fifteen years ago, and now we are able to access it through our cell phones. It has become a huge part of our lives and thinking about it, I don’t think we could live without it. They also gave the example about the cell phone. When the cell phone became more popular, it started out with only being capable of making and receiving calls. Along with that, it now can take pictures, your able to text messages, update your Facebook page, go on the internet, etc.
